Introduction

The University of Oregon has purchased a site license for McAfee's VirusScan® Enterprise for Windows and Virex® for Macintosh. This license allows us to distribute these packages free of charge to current UO students, faculty and staff for use both at home and work. Too often we are called upon to help users fix computers that are nearly useless due to spyware and virus infections. We strongly recommend that you install VirusScan® or Virex® to protect yourself before you lose valuable time and data. Please install and run only one anti-virus product at a time.

Windows System Requirements

McAfee VirusScan® Enterprise 8.5i requires:
(2000,2003, XP, Vista) For both desktops and servers. If you have Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) for Windows, our installer will help you uninstall NAV as part of the installation process.

• Pentium or Celeron processor running a minimum of 166MHz
• Minimum of 32MB of RAM (512MB or more recommended)
• Minimum 150MB free disk space
• Windows XP Home and Professional SP1 (SP2 recommended), or
• Windows 2000 Professional SP3 or later or
• Windows Vista
• Alert! Windows 95, 98 and ME users: Our experience has been that these computers are too old in most cases to be safely upgraded to our new anti-virus software. The only real solution for these machines is outright replacement with a newer computer running Windows XP. Please do feel free to contact us for additional advice.

Macintosh System Requirements

Mac OS X
Macintosh: Viruscan 8.6 (OS 10.4.6 and higher- incl. 10.5)

Virex® 7.7 requires MacOS X 10.3.3 to 10.4.x, though it will also run under Mac OS X 10.2.6 through 10.2.9. Virex® also requires 128MB of RAM and 40MB of free hard drive space.
